Accessibility

This website is run by Kids in Museums. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader.

Website text is written as simply and clearly as possible.

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

Kids in Museums is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below:

Non-accessible content

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

The following non-compliances are in the process of being corrected:

  • WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.3 (contrast minimum) – Some text and navigation buttons do not have colour contrast ratio of 4.5:1.
  • WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (non-text content) – Some images do not have a text alternative.
  • WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.1 (bypass blocks) – You cannot skip repeated content in the page header when using a screen reader.
  • WCAG 2.1 success criterion 3.1.1 (language of page) – The default human language of each web page cannot be programmatically determined. Welsh language pages may not be set automatically to Welsh language.

Disproportionate burden

Not applicable at this time.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

  • WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.2 (name, role value) – Most older PDF documents in our Resources section are not fully accessible to screen reader software.

In 2020, we replaced as many PDFs as possible with accessible HTML pages. We endeavour that any new PDFs or Word documents we publish will meet accessibility standards.

Kids in Museums does not assume responsibility for third party applications, such as:

  • Google Maps
  • YouTube.

How we tested this website

This website was designed and built by Thirty8 Digital to WCAG 2.0 AA standard.

In January 2020, the site was internally tested by the Kids in Museums team against WCAG 2.1 AA standard. We tested a sample of pages, including those explaining our core programmes and a random selection of others.

Our accessibility roadmap (last updated December 2020) shows how we worked to improve accessibility across the site.
