Family Friendly Museum Audits for Museums in Wales

We are inviting museums in Wales to apply for a fully funded Kids in Museums Family Friendly Museum Audit, mentoring and funding generously supported by the Welsh Government.

Kids in Museums is inviting Welsh museums to apply for a fully-funded Family Friendly Museum Audit, three hours of mentoring with one of our experienced consultants and a £500 grant funding to implement improvements to your provision for families. This is generously supported by the Welsh Government.

There are up to four audits available. Audits and mentoring can be conducted in either Welsh or English and the mentoring time and grant funding will need to be used by the end of February 2025.

About Kids in Museums Family Friendly Museum Audit, Mentoring and Funding

A Kids in Museums Family Friendly Museum Audit is a simple, practical and cost-effective tool to make your museum more welcoming to children and families.

The audit is based on the Kids in Museums Manifesto, one of our most powerful and longstanding initiatives. The Manifesto is entirely based on feedback from children, young people and families about their experiences of visiting museums.

“I signed up for the audit hoping just to get a bit of feedback about the museum and hopefully some funding to create some activities. However, I ended up with a better understanding of how families use museums, what they like to see in museums, and some great ideas for easy changes that will make a big difference. It has been a great experience and I would highly recommend it to any museum or venue.”Hollie Gaze, Visitor Services Officer at Swansea Museum

The Family Friendly Museum Audit will evaluate a visit to your museum against the six points of the Manifesto to understand the effectiveness of your welcome for children and families. An experienced Kids in Museums Consultant will review everything, from the café and ticket desk to your interpretation, spaces or displays aimed at children and families.

Following their visit, the consultant will produce an illustrated report highlighting existing areas of good practice and including a simple cost-effective action plan for areas for improvement. As well as offering a practical guide to making your museum more family friendly, the report will serve as a powerful advocacy tool for including children and families across your organisation.

Once the report is completed, each museum will have up to three hours of mentoring time with the consultant who carried out the audit. This time can be used in agreement with the mentor between September 2024 and February 2025.

Each museum will also be given £500 grant funding to implement improvements to their family provision based on the audit and mentoring. This could be used to purchase materials, equipment or resources and will need to be spent by February 2025.

This programme is generously funded by the Welsh Government.
