The first Kids in Museums Manifesto was published in The Guardian on 12 July 2003. To celebrate 20 years since the beginning of our movement, we are inviting heritage organisations to take part in a social media moment this summer using our hashtag #KidsInMuseums.

We want to help you shout about what museums provide for children, young people and families ahead of the summer holidays and how our programmes have supported you to welcome these groups.

How to get involved

To get involved, post on Twitter using our hashtag #KidsInMuseums on 12 July at 10am.

You can also post on other social media channels, like Instagram or Facebook too.

You could share that your museum has:

  • been shortlisted for or won our Family Friendly Museum Award (see all previous winners and shortlisted museums)
  • signed our Kids in Museums Manifesto (check the map on our website), put it into action at your venue or used it in staff training
  • held a Digital Takeover Day or Takeover Day in this or previous years
  • taken part in one of our half term museum trails, like the recent Montgomery Bonbon: Museum Mystery Trail
  • attended our training and heard anything that might have stuck with you or influenced your work
  • set up a Youth Panel, appointed Young Trustees or offered work experience or placements for young people
  • personal memories of Kids in Museums over its history, its programmes or its impact
  • great interactives, events or activities for children this summer
  • or something else!

We would love to hear from as many museums, galleries and cultural institutions as possible. Remember to tag us @kidsinmuseums so we can see and share your posts on the day.

We’re looking forward to seeing your posts.

Here is a draft post to help you:

  • Happy 20th Birthday, @kidsinmuseums! We are proud signatories of the #KidsInMuseums Manifesto and love welcoming visitors of all ages. Here’s what’s on for children, young people and families this summer: [Add a hyperlink to your summer events.]

We also have a downloadable graphic sized for Twitter or Instagram you can use.

Thank you for taking part and for your support over the last 20 years. Here’s to the next 20!
