Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Read about our commitment to promoting equality, diversity and inclusion.

Kids in Museums wants all museums, galleries and heritage sites to be welcoming, inclusive and accessible to all children, young people and families. Through our work, we strive to reduce inequality of access to museums for these groups, ensure museums offer programmes that represent and value their diversity, and work with museums to enable them to become inclusive public spaces for all.

Our work is strengthened by having a diverse staff team, Board of Trustees and volunteers that includes people from backgrounds currently underrepresented in museum audiences. We are committed to creating an inclusive working environment where difference is valued and respected and a variety of perspectives feed into the development of all our programmes. We proactively work to identify and tackle discrimination and strive to promote an open culture where staff feel comfortable to report discrimination if they encounter it in the course of their work.

We welcome participants in our programmes from all backgrounds and aim to make all of our programming as accessible and inclusive as possible. We strive to represent a range of perspectives and experiences in our training, resources and online content and aim to use our Kids in Museums Manifesto, Takeover Day and the Family Friendly Museum Award to promote and champion best practice in equality, diversity and inclusion. We want everyone who participates in Kids in Museums programmes to feel safe and respected.

We are committed to improving the organisation’s approach to equality, diversity and inclusion to match sector best practice. We will ensure all staff, Trustees and volunteers receive appropriate training and development opportunities, and build a culture where we are open to learning and new ideas. This will support our aims to change children, young people and families’ experiences in museums and ensure our organisational culture matches our vision and mission.
