Spring Museum Trail: Under 5s

Welcome to our digital Spring Museum Trail for under 5s and their families.

The trail has been designed to do at your house, so please remember to follow the government guidance and stay at home.

Instructions

Find spring themed objects and take part in a series of fun challenges with your family.

All the objects are based in the museums that were shortlisted for our Family Friendly Museum Award 2019.

Enter our book competition

We will be giving away a bundle of brilliant children’s activity books from Quarto to one lucky winner.

Stop One

Our first stop is the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery in Stoke-on-Trent.

Look at this artwork from their collection.

What animal can you see in the picture? Can you make the sound it makes?

    That’s right – it’s a lamb!

    Challenge

    Lambs like jumping around in spring. Here are some jumping games you can play.

    • How far can you jump?
    • Can you jump between different points in the house or garden?
    • If you have a trampoline, can you challenge someone in your house to a jumping competition?

Stop Two

Our second stop is Parc Howard Museum in Llanelli, South Wales.

Look at this plate from their collection.

What animal can you see on the plate?

Stop Three

Our third stop is the Museum of Liverpool.

Take a look at this car from the museum’s collection.

What colour is the car?

    Yes – the car is yellow. The same colour as a spring flower called a daffodil.

    Challenge

    Can you find ten daffodil-coloured things in your home?

    A table covered in yellow objects, including a yellow Pikachu teddy, paint, blow up saxophone, vitamins and various small toys.

Stop Four

The fourth stop is Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences in Cambridge.

At the museum you can see the study of a famous fossil collector, Dr Woodward. Take a look.

Dr Woodward owned these cupboards and put the precious things he collected inside. Can you spot something he collected on the beach in the picture?

    He collected shells.

    Challenge

    Create a Museum of Spring Things. You can use an empty box or a piece of paper with squares drawn on it and add your items. This could be things found in the garden, the house or things you have made.

Stop Five

It’s time for our final stop: Valence House Museum in Dagenham, East London.

The museum has some pictures of bunnies in its collection. Have a look.

How many rabbits can you spot in the picture?

    There are three rabbits in the picture.

    The rabbits were part of a town show where the best rabbit won a trophy. Here’s a picture of one of the trophies.

    Challenge

    Have your own teddy or pet competition at home. Categories could be best ears, best nose, most huggable, oldest, best name or whatever else you can think of! Make a pretend trophy or find a prize for the winner.

    Send us a photo of your competition winning animals and you could win a bundle of children’s activity books from Quarto.
