Takeover Day 2012
Friday 23rd November 2012

Museums, galleries and heritage sites across the UK invited children and young people to take over for the day

The kids have taken over! Over 1500 children and young people – from toddlers to young adults – took over 85 museums on Takeover Day 2012 on Friday 23rd November. Museum directors, front of house staff, curators, conservators, website designers and catering staff were replaced by children. Museums put up posters announcing We’re Being Taken Over. Young people proudly wore their I’m Taking Over stickers. Children were in charge – meeting and greeting visitors, setting up exhibitions, conserving artefacts, gathering new stories for the museum to tell, designing visitor guides and digital resources, and even processing archaeological finds. There was nothing children couldn’t do – proving how putting them at the heart of a museum makes it a vibrant and exciting place to be, full of fresh ideas and new perspectives.

TV historian Dan Snow, Kids in Museums Patron, says,

‘It sounds scary – but it’s great that so many kids are part of Takeover Day, taking over museums up and down the country, doing stuff that usually only adults do. It’s a great opportunity for kids to get really stuck in and up close to history, heritage and all the wonderful things museums can offer. Some are even being in-house historians and archaeologists. They’ll be putting me out of a job soon!’

Culture Minister, Ed Vaizey, says,

‘Takeover Day gives a new perspective on children’s engagement with museums: they can curate, conserve and even do the catering. It also shows that, given the chance, children can bring fresh ideas and new perspectives to a museum, and can really contribute, and Kids in Museums will ensure that this valuable work lasts all year. ’

Shadow Culture Minister Dan Jarvis, says,

‘Takeover Day in museums is a wonderful initiative that proves what a valuable contribution children can make to our cultural heritage. May the spirit of Takeover Day live on in museums, putting young people at their heart. Kids in Museums are to be congratulated for making this happen.’

Maggie Atkinson, Children’s Commissioner for England said,

‘Children’s Commissioner’s Takeover Day provides a brilliant opportunity for children and young people to make a difference to their communities. They bring ideas, imagination and energy which can really make a difference to organisations. Kids in Museums have recognised this and promoted the day in museums and galleries across the country. With their support dozens have signed up allowing children to become young curators and get excited about museums. It is encouraging so many organisations are embracing the involvement of young citizens in their work which is what Children’s Commissioner’s Takeover Day is all about.’
