After considering government guidance that museums may be able to open from 4 July, we have decided to move our annual Digital Takeover Day forward one week to Friday 26 June 2020.

Every year we encourage museums, galleries, archives, historic homes and heritage sites from the UK and beyond to hand over their social media accounts to young people.

This national event gives us the opportunity to shout about the value of culture and heritage to young people. It helps museums to see their collections in a new light and get a better idea of what young people are interested in. Our hashtag #TakeoverDay has trended on Twitter and reached millions of people.

Normally on Digital Takeover Day, young people visit museums and heritage sites to explore and document what goes on behind-the-scenes. Though museums are currently closed, we are still asking you to get under 25s involved with your social media in whatever way you can.

Do you have a youth panel, young trustees, interns or apprentices you could hand over your accounts to? Are you running a daily challenge that young people could take over for the day? Can you ask your young followers to join an online task or activity? We’ve put together a series of challenges for you at the bottom of this page to inspire you.

We are holding a Digital Takeover Day Competition for young people in the UK who share a picture of Challenge One. The winner will be decided by Philip Mould, broadcaster, art dealer and Kids in Museums President. Read the full Terms and Conditions.

Whatever you post, remember to use our hashtag #TakeoverDay.

You can find advice for letting young people take over your Instagram and Twitter accounts in our Digital Takeover Day resources.

Challenges for young people

If your museum doesn’t have a digital collection, consider using a public digital collection, such as Art UK.

  1. Digital Takeover Day Competition challenge: Recreate a museum object or artwork at home.
This could be a photo, artwork or drawing inspired by a museum object or picture.
    Here are some examples.
  2. Share your favourite object.
Are your collections online? Ask young people to pick their favourite.
  3. Share a museum souvenir.
  4. Share your favourite place in the building or outside in the grounds.
Is there a special place your followers are missing? A great opportunity to share it and get people excited to visit again.
  5. Interview with a member of staff about what they do.
Can young people hold a virtual interview with a staff member on Zoom?
  6. Match an emoji with an object in the museum.
    Here’s an example.
  7. Ask your followers to guess a painting or object from your collection using emojis.
    Here’s an example.
  8. Create a meme by using a photo of a museum object or artwork and adding text.
    Here’s an example.
  9. Create a poll or quiz for followers of your account to answer.
  10. Ask for followers to submit questions about the museum for you to answer.
