UPDATE 19 March 2020: We are sorry that the Kids in Museums Carnival has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak. We are looking into ways to share learnings from our speakers virtually or at a later date. We apologise for the inconvenience caused and will be offering a full refund to ticket holders.

Today we’re delighted to announce the second Kids in Museums Carnival: a celebration of the very best work going on across the UK to involve children, young people and families in heritage.

The inaugural Kids in Museums Carnival was held in January 2017 at Tate Modern. The event is an opportunity to connect with the museum learning community, share challenges and discuss ways to improve your family offer in a friendly and positive environment.

You will hear best practice approaches to a range of topics from the museums shortlisted for our Family Friendly Museum Award 2019. Through a series of informal short talks and workshops, they will share practical advice and ideas on how to:

  • reach out to non-visiting families
  • overcome practical barriers for families, such as transport and the cost of a day out
  • create more inclusive spaces for families
  • meaningfully engage with young people
  • make your spaces more welcoming for families
  • run great family provision on a shoestring
  • support young people’s mental health.

Find out how Kids in Museums can support your work and how to get involved in our programmes throughout the year. There will also be space to chat with the Kids in Museums team at our drop-in advice stall.

Take part in playful activities, snap a photo in our selfie booth and try your hand at designing a party hat to celebrate 10 years of Takeover Day.

Alison Bowyer, Executive Director of Kids in Museums, said: “We’re delighted to be bringing back the Kids in Museums Carnival this year. The conference is open to all museums and heritage professionals, from volunteers and interns, to freelancers and trustees. We hope that as many people as possible will be able to join us for a day packed full of inspiration on how to enhance your provision for children, young people and families.”

Tickets are £32.93. We are offering a limited number of free places for staff who are in their first roles within a museum, which will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Please email us for further details: [email protected]
