Get your organisation on board

  • Involve a wide range of staff from the start. The more people involved in the planning stages, the easier it is to take an idea forward.
  • Take advantage of everyone’s strengths and expertise. Although some staff may not be in regular contact with young people they will have a variety of new things to teach them and interesting and varied perspectives of your organisation to share.
  • Don’t forget volunteers. They can be a vital asset in organising and advertising the event as well as helping to co-ordinate on the day.
  • Don’t forget to involve your marketing, PR and social media departments. Let people know what you are doing. Remember this is happening all over country and is a great way to showcase the important work happening in your organisation.
  • Use VIPs and local press to build your profile.
  • Finally celebrate your achievement. Everyone loves a success story and young people may go on to be your biggest champions.

Find and engage a group to work with

  • Make use of existing relationships with agencies and youth groups.
  • Target and make use of sympathetic networks and meetings to spread the word.
  • Be specific and talk their language. You’ll be offering them a great opportunity and they will take you seriously.
  • Visit youth clubs – never under estimate the value of face to face contact.

 Plan and deliver your event

  • Start small. Don’t be over ambitious or complicated. If you choose a focus for your event, it’s more likely to be successful.
  • Plan in advance. Make the offer early to a group of young people and you can make sure everyone is getting the most out of the partnership.
  • Choose an appropriate group. Think about the age and size of the group to suit needs.
  • Make the aims of the event clear. Tasks and clear objectives give the young people a real sense of achievement.
  • Offer refreshments if possible. Kids love cake as much as the next heritage professional!
  • Invite parents or class mates to be visitors. If you’re planning a public event then make sure you have an audience.
  • Don’t worry! It’s amazing how well young people take on responsibility so give them a chance and see what happens.
