Westminster Abbey Family Day, London

When 13 year-old Bella Madge visited Westminster Abbey on one of their Family Days, She was impressed with the majesty of the building and the history behind it.

Westminster Abbey was one of the most interesting experiences for me. Following a chat with a group of peers, I soon gathered data that told me that many teenagers are not as interested in museums as I happen to be, which I had guessed all along. They hold their interests in social media whereas I hold my interests in things such as museums. But, as I entered Westminster Abbey, it struck me just how amazing museums can be. I was overcome with an overwhelming sense of history and power, intrigue and prestige. Suddenly, I realised how many people were remembered here and felt suddenly honoured and in awe that I was playing witness to so much magic.

Firstly, what caught my attention was the tomb of the unknown soldier. During the war, one soldier was brought back and buried so all would remember and honour those who died to protect King and country. Nobody knows who this brave man was but he is a reminder that all those men who died for us are people who deserve to be remembered and not to fade into the mists of history and time.

Later, there was a story time and my Mother, Brother and Sister all went to listen whereas my Father and I stayed behind. At first, we merely loitered. I stared around at the beautiful stained glass windows and the scenes, colours and life they depicted. Then, my Father took me for a walk around the Abbey. Amongst my desires, I longed to see Poet’s Corner. English being my favourite subject, I wanted to see the memorials of all the famous poets from the days of old, whose work inspire thoughts and dreams inside us all.

One of my most prominent memories was when I saw the beautiful tomb of Mary, Queen of Scots. A friend of mine is an extraordinary history enthusiast and is a huge fan of Mary. You could imagine the pleasure it gave me to send her a text message saying “At Westminster Abbey. I just saw Mary, Queen of Scots’ grave.”

Eventually, my family met up again and we all made our way back to the beginning. My Mother told me previously in advance to our visit, that we were going on a special family day. There were two different types of tours we could embark on but I chose the one that interested me most which happened to be the Kings and Queens tour. First of all, we were given a name badge with a King or Queen on it. I, to my slight disappointment, had to be King Henry the seventh. I was slightly envious of those who were Queens…

The tour guide talked about each one of us and gave us a special crown. I waited in anticipation for my turn. At one point, we reached where Isaac Newton was buried. I felt amazed as I was standing over him. I felt a lifetime of mathematics flash past me as I stood there and I texted my friend “At Westminster Abbey. I am standing on Isaac Newton.”

We eventually went around but we had a brief break as we listened to the boys from the choir add their voices to the echoes of the other visitors around us. It was that moment where I enjoyed gazing at the beautiful architecture before me and really appreciated its marvels and glories.

After we had visited my grave (That is to say, Henry the seventh’s) and eaten at the splendid restaurant, our glorious trip was almost over. We did, however, do one final act before we departed. We lit two candles and placed them down to honour my dead Grandpa and Grandma who were always dear to me and my whole family. Then, we left and took the train home to go and relax. All my life, I have read of other people’s adventures and wanted to have my own. From the tales of Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit, to Beatrice from Divergent, to Harry Potter. But now I realise that I made my own adventure that day and that others should experience this.

I would definitely recommend a trip to Westminster Abbey as it is a good day out for kids as well as adults with a range of activities. So, if you would consider going, I think it would be a benefit to you as you will also learn a lot.

The next Family Day at Westminster Abbey is on 3rd June 2017.
