You can take a walk through three centuries of sitting rooms, dress up as a 17th century Scottish border bandit, or take a journey down into the depths of a coal mine. These extraordinary experiences happen in a historic engine house, a Venetian style mansion dedicated to Prince Albert, and a gun battery.
This year’s shortlist for the Telegraph Family Friendly Museum Award is a reflection of all the different sorts of museums in Britain, and how each one can offer a wonderful welcome to families.
The 2015 shortlist for the Telegraph Family Friendly Museum Award is:
The Diving Museum, Gosport, Hampshire
The Geffrye, Museum of the Home, London
National Coal Mining Museum for England, Wakefield, West Yorkshire
Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter, Devon
Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery, Carlisle, Cumbria
The Winding House, Caerphilly, Wales
The shortlist was picked from a 20-strong longlist by an expert panel of judges including historian and broadcaster Helen Castor, celebrity author and Kids in Museums Patron Damian Dibben and Sharon Heal, Director of the Museums Association.
The Telegraph Family Friendly Museum Award is the biggest museum award in Britain and the only one where families pick the winner.
Dea Birkett, Director of Kids in Museums, says:
‘The bar for being in the top six most family friendly museums in Britain rises every year. With over 800 nominations for the 2015, the imagination and innovation these six shortlisted museums have shown is remarkable.
‘They have no only welcomed families, but gone to extraordinary steps to make their visit live on long after they have left the museum. Excellent museums like these can make a huge difference to families, offering opportunities amongst real things that are unique and special.’
What happens next?
The shortlisted museums are road-tested anonymously by families. These families pick the winner. So watch out for the mystery museum family judges if you are at any of the shortlisted museums this summer!
