I want to take my son (aged 7) to a museum this weekend. I dont want to travel more than 1 hour – We live in Swindon, Wiltshire. We are going to the Natural History Museum, London later this month.
Any suggestions on GOOD museums/places of interest for us to visit???

Lots of fun and lots of stimulus for learning in Oxford at the Natural History and Pitt Rivers museums – two collections – one site.

Thiss whole village is a museum, and there’s plenty of room for roaming around. There sre museums e.g. of Fox Talbot, but this would be a fun day out. Take wellies!

Why not come along to the Museum of English Rural Life (MERL) in Reading? We’re open 2 to 4.30pm at weekends. Entrance (and parking, a stone’s throw from the centre of Reading) is free! We have fascinating collections about the history of food, farming, life in the countryside and crafts. You can borrow a ‘Ways of Seeing’ activity bag, follow our ‘Relic Trail’, search for (toy!) rats around the museum, have a go at brass rubbing, draw, dress up as a Victorian farmer and even get outside in the garden if the weather’s kind enough! I’m sure you’d find it worth the trip. Contact us on merlevents@reading.ac.uk or call 0118 378 8660 for more details. Hope to see you at the weekend.

It has to be the Wiltshire Heritage Museum – lots of things for kids to do and lots of fascinating things from the Stonehenge and Avebury World Heritage Site. Combine with visiting Avebury, Stonehenge and then onto Salisbury Museum too! Days out don’t get much better …

You have lots of great museums in Swindon: STEAM, Lydiard House and the Computer Museum, as well as the Museum and Art gallery in Old Town. All have great activities for children and take no time to get to!

Brunel’s ss Great Britain is not far from Swindon, if you are planning another museum visit soon. Lots to do, see, hear and sniff (yes… we even have vomit smells!). My son loves the ‘talking toilet’! Check out http://www.ssgreatbritain.or/whatson or CBBC All Over The Place featured the ship in their second episode on Sunday (we are 13 minutes in), which is available to view on the CBBC website. Hope to see you in Bristol soon!

Just down the road in Cirencester is the Corinium Museum which has just made the longlist for the Guardian Family Friendly Museum Award 2011. It is jam-packed full of family fun including, computer interactives, hands-on exhibits, reconstructions, games, dressing up, and more. It is an archaeology museum concentrating on the Roman town of Corinium (Cirencester) but also covers the prehistoric period to the 20th century in the Cotswolds. A thoroughly enjoyable day out!
